Experience by Jane Merchant

I found this poem in the book "Think About These Things" copyrighted 1956.  Whatever was going on in the world when the poem was written still sounds like the world today.

What happend today?
The newsmen tell
The tidings so:
A government fell,

A statesman was killed,
An airplane crashed,
A city cowered,
Hurricane-lashed.

But here upon
This quite street
An old, old lady,
Grave and sweet,

Handed a rose
To a crying child,
And sunlight sparkled
As they smiled.

I must believe
The clamorous, raw
News; but the smile
Is what I saw.

YEP! The same world, the same happenings, even after that many years.

Does sound as if it could be written today. I guess things never change. We are just bombarded more today because of so many 24 hour news channels repeating the same stuff over and over. Is it any wonder we haven't all gone nuts!
